Russell’s interest in photography began when he was at university, purchasing his first film based SLR in his late teenage years, and experimenting with black and white darkroom work in his 20s. Purchasing a digital camera in 2003 re invigorated his interest in photography, gradually moving from ‘point and shoot’ to DSLR.
A shared interest with Carol in the outdoors, travel and the Australian outback has provided a rich and diverse range of subject matter for Russell’s photography. He is a regular competitor in camera club competitions, and successfully exhibits widely.
Building on many years of experience and self taught skills, Russell has drawn upon his involvement in the Warrragul Camera Club and participation in several short courses to develop his skills. He is currently enrolled in an Advanced Diploma of Photography at Photography Studies College, Melbourne.
Russell’s images have been accepted in (juried) National Photographic Competitions in Ballarat, Pakenham and Warragul. Russell’s image ‘Team Work’ earned a Merit at Ballarat in 2016. ‘Eggs for Breakfast’ also gained a Merit at Pakenham in 2016. In 2018 the image ‘On Stage’ gained the award for ‘Best Photographic Work’ in the Ficifolia Art Show. Russell was also acknowledged as the ‘Most Successful Photography Exhibitor’ in this show. Rainbow Valley 2 was nominated as the ‘Best Black and White Landscape Print’, and also the ‘Best Landscape Image’ for 2018 for the Warragul Camera Club.
